My AVI will not play — can I still get the audio?
Usually yes. A file that will not play is normally being refused for its video codec, and the audio track is read separately. If the whole file is corrupt rather than merely old, nothing can help.
Is this faster than converting the video?
Far faster. Converting an AVI to MP4 re-encodes every frame; extracting audio skips the video entirely. Minutes become seconds.
The AVI already has MP3 audio — is this lossless?
No. The track is decoded and re-encoded rather than copied out, so it is a second lossy pass. Raise the bitrate to 256 or 320 kbps if the original audio was already low quality and you want to add as little as possible.
What about AC-3 surround audio?
It is downmixed to stereo, because MP3 has no surround mode that players handle reliably. For a home video or a lecture that makes no practical difference.
What bitrate should I pick for an old recording?
For speech, 128 kbps is plenty and keeps the file small. For music, 192 kbps or higher — though no bitrate can improve on audio that was poor when it was recorded.
Is there a size limit?
2 GB on desktop. Extracting audio produces a small output, so the ceiling is about what the converter will accept rather than about the result.
