If the PDF is a scan, the characters are read on your device. That needs a one-time 21 MB model download, then a few seconds per page. Accuracy is good but not guaranteed — stamps, handwriting and badly skewed pages come out worse.

Does it work on scanned PDFs?
Yes. If the pages carry no text layer, an AI recognition model runs locally in your browser. The first scan triggers a one-time model download of about 21 MB, after which it is cached.
Is my document uploaded for the AI recognition?
No. The models run inside your browser — that is the entire point. Every other converter offering OCR sends your file to a server; this one downloads the model to you instead.
How accurate is the recognition?
Around 98% of characters on clean printed documents in our own testing. Real scans are harder: stamps, handwriting, low resolution and a crooked page all make it worse. Read the result against the original before relying on it.
Why is my two-column PDF jumbled?
Because a PDF stores positioned glyphs, not columns. Reading order is inferred, and for a multi-column layout the inference is often wrong. That limitation is inherent to the format rather than specific to this converter.
Are line breaks and paragraphs preserved?
Line breaks are reconstructed from the glyph positions, so the output keeps its lines. Paragraph structure, headings and emphasis are not represented in plain text at all — convert to Word if you need them.
Is there a size limit?
80 MB. Pages are rendered into memory as bitmaps when recognition is needed, and that cost is measured in pixels rather than in how well the PDF compressed.
Is it really free?
Yes — every conversion on this site, with no account, no watermark and no daily cap. The work happens on your own device, so there is no server bill for us to pass on to you.
Do I need to install anything?
No. It runs in any modern browser, on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. There is nothing to download and nothing to sign up for, and once the page has loaded it keeps working with the network switched off.
