What happens to an animated GIF?

Only the first frame is written, because a PNG holds a single image. Keep the GIF if you need the animation, or convert it to MP4 or WebM.

Does PNG improve the colours?

It stops them being restricted, but it cannot restore colours the GIF discarded. Banding and dithering already in the image are preserved exactly.

Is transparency preserved?

Yes, and it improves. GIF has a single fully-transparent colour index; PNG has a real alpha channel, so the transparency it carries is at least as good as the original.

Will the PNG be larger or smaller?

Either. A simple GIF of flat colours can grow, while a heavily dithered one sometimes shrinks, because PNG compresses smooth regions better than a dither pattern. The result panel shows the real figure.

When is this the right conversion?

Before editing a still image that happens to be a GIF, or when a tool requires PNG. For animation, GIF or a video format is the answer.
