FAQ

How is this different from splitting?

Splitting cuts the whole document into parts and gives you all of them. Extracting takes the pages you asked for and gives you one file — the rest is simply not in the output. If you want two chapters as two separate files, split by ranges; if you want one chapter as one file, extract.

What order do the extracted pages come out in?

Page order, always ascending, whatever order you clicked them in. That is the safe default for the common case, which is lifting a contiguous section out of a document. When the order itself is the point — pulling pages 9, 3 and 5 into exactly that sequence — reorder the pages instead, which is the tool built for that.

Is the extracted file as good as the original?

Pixel for pixel, yes. The pages are copied without being decoded or re-encoded, so text stays selectable and searchable, vector drawings stay sharp at any zoom and a scanned page keeps exactly the resolution it had. Bookmarks covering the pages you kept are carried over and renumbered. What does not come across is the rest of the document level: the named destinations that internal links point at, and the form dictionary that makes fields fillable.

Why is the extracted file larger than its share of the original?

Fonts. The pages you extract bring the complete fonts they use, and a font is not divisible — so a two-page extract from a document with a large embedded Chinese typeface can be most of the size of a much longer file. This shows up starkly at the extreme: 40 single-page files out of one manual summed to 9.80 MB, against roughly 0.41 MB for those pages in the source.

Can I extract from a scanned document?

Yes. This never reads what is on a page, so a scan with no text layer works exactly like a normal document. The extracted images are the original images, unmodified — no second round of JPEG compression.

Is there a limit on the source document?

Files up to 150 MB, and the page thumbnails are drawn for documents up to 300 pages. Past 300 you can still extract by typing the page numbers. Long documents take longer to open than large ones do — a 14,736-page file needs about 19 seconds before anything can be selected, while a 180-page scan of the same 150 MB is ready almost at once.
