FAQ
Can I just rename the file to .mp3?
No. The extension is a label; the audio inside is AAC, and an MP3 player looking for MP3 frames will not find any. Some tolerant players will fall back to sniffing the contents and play it anyway, but the devices that most need the conversion are precisely the ones that will not.
Will the MP3 sound worse than the M4A?
Slightly, because it is a second lossy pass. At 192 kbps and above the difference is very hard to hear on ordinary equipment. If the M4A is your only copy of something you care about, keep it and treat the MP3 as the playback copy.
Does it work on voice memos and audiobooks?
Voice memos yes. Audiobooks bought from a store are often .m4b with DRM, which cannot be converted by anything that respects the encryption, this converter included. Unprotected .m4a and .m4b files convert normally.
What bitrate should I choose?
192 kbps for music. For spoken word — memos, lectures, podcasts — 96 or 128 kbps halves the file again with no practical loss, since speech occupies far less of the frequency range than music.
Are the title and album tags kept?
Yes, tags in the source are carried over to the MP3 unless you switch on "Remove metadata". Cover art is not guaranteed to survive, because it is stored differently in the two formats.
How long does it take?
A few seconds for a normal song, and the work happens on your machine rather than in a queue. There is no upload, so a batch of twenty files takes as long as your CPU needs and not a moment more.
