FAQ

Does FLAC recover the quality the MP4 lost?

No. The audio in an MP4 is lossy AAC, and FLAC preserves exactly what that decodes to. Lossless means nothing further is lost, not that anything is restored.

Then why choose FLAC over MP3?

Because you plan to edit and re-save the audio and want no further generational loss. For listening, MP3 or M4A is much smaller and sounds the same.

FLAC or WAV for editing?

FLAC — identical samples at roughly half the size, and most editors read it. Pick WAV only if a specific tool insists on uncompressed input.

How large will the file be?

Considerably larger than an MP3 extraction — roughly half the size of a WAV of the same audio, which is still many times an MP3. That is why this conversion has a lower size limit.

Is there a quality setting?

No. FLAC is lossless, so there is no quality decision — only how hard the encoder works to make the file smaller, which does not affect the audio.
