FAQ
Does cropping delete what it hides?
No, and this is the thing to know before using it for anything sensitive. Cropping sets the page’s crop box — the rectangle a reader displays — and everything outside it stays in the file. Widen the box again in any PDF editor and the trimmed area comes back, text still selectable. That is correct behaviour for a display setting, and it makes this the wrong tool for removing a signature, an address or a name from a document. We do not have a right tool for that, which is worth saying plainly rather than letting a crop look like one.
Why percentages instead of millimetres?
Because one document can mix page sizes, and "take five percent off each edge" then does the sensible thing on every page, where "take ten millimetres" quietly means something different on A4 than on a scanned receipt. If you need an exact measurement for print, crop in the layout tool that made the file.
Does it work on pages that are rotated?
Yes, and it trims the edge you pointed at rather than a different one. A crop box is stored in unrotated page coordinates, so on a page marked as turned a quarter, the edge you see at the top is the box’s left. The margins are rotated by the page’s own angle before they are applied — we tested all four angles on a page with a coloured strip along each edge and checked which strip disappeared.
Can I crop only some pages?
Yes. Every page starts selected, because trimming a scan usually means trimming all of it; clear the ones you want to leave alone. Pages you deselect keep the crop box they already had, whatever that was.
Will the file get smaller?
Barely, and not because of the crop. The hidden content is still stored, so the saving is a few bytes of changed structure. If size is the goal, Compress PDF re-encodes the images, which is where the bytes actually are.
How much can come off one edge?
Forty-five percent, which still leaves a tenth of the page in each direction. Past that there is nothing left to read, and a tool that lets you save a blank page is a tool that will eventually be used to save a blank page by accident.
