Will my old DVD player accept this AVI?
Probably not. Players from the DivX era decode DivX and Xvid, not H.264, and this converter produces H.264 inside the AVI container. The wrapper will be correct but the video codec will not be one the hardware knows.
Then when is converting to AVI useful?
When software rather than hardware is doing the refusing — older editing suites, some scientific, industrial and medical systems that were written against AVI and check the container.
Is quality lost?
Yes, a little. Unlike MP4 to MOV, this cannot be a stream copy — the file is genuinely re-encoded, which means a second generation of compression.
How long does it take?
A noticeable fraction of the video's own length, because every frame is decoded and encoded again. Minutes rather than seconds for anything substantial.
