What is a TS file and why do I have one?
It is a broadcast transport stream. Satellite and cable recorders, DVRs, some camcorders and most stream-capture tools write TS because it is designed to survive being cut off mid-transmission.
What happens to 5.1 audio?
It is downmixed to stereo. MP3 has no reliable surround mode, so the channels are folded together. Dialogue stays clear; a concert mix loses its separation.
My TS recording is incomplete — will it still convert?
Usually yes. Transport streams are built to remain playable when truncated, so a recording that was cut off generally converts up to the point where it stops.
Are M2TS files from a camcorder supported?
Yes. M2TS is the Blu-ray and AVCHD variant of the same container and is accepted here alongside TS.
How long does a long recording take?
A minute or two for a two-hour programme. The video is skipped rather than decoded, so the time depends on the audio length rather than the file size.
Is there a size limit?
2 GB on desktop, which a long high-definition recording can exceed. Files above 64 MB are read where they sit rather than copied into memory, which is what makes multi-gigabyte sources workable at all.
