FAQ
Why is the GIF so much bigger than the video?
Because GIF stores frames almost independently, while H.264 stores mostly the differences between them. That is a thirty-year gap in compression technology. Shorten the clip, lower the frame rate, or reduce the width — each cuts the size roughly proportionally.
Can I convert a whole video?
Technically yes, practically no. A few minutes of footage produces a GIF of hundreds of megabytes that most browsers will struggle to display. GIF is for clips of a few seconds; anything longer should stay video.
What frame rate should I choose?
12 fps is the default and reads as smooth for most motion while halving the frames of a 24 fps source. Raise it to 15 or 20 for fast action, drop to 8 or 10 for slow pans and screen recordings, where the size saving is larger than the visible cost.
Why does the colour look slightly grainy?
That is dithering — deliberately mixing available colours to approximate ones the 256-colour palette does not contain. It trades a fine speckle for smooth gradients, which at normal viewing size is much the better bargain than visible banding.
Is the audio kept?
No. GIF has no audio track at all, so the sound is discarded. If you need the sound, keep the clip as MP4 or convert to WebM.
Does the GIF loop?
Yes, forever. That is written into the file, so it loops in any viewer without needing a web page to tell it to.
