Why not convert the WAV to MP3 first?

Because that would add a lossy generation for no reason. Encoding directly from WAV to the MP4's AAC track means the audio is compressed once rather than twice.

Can I add cover art or a waveform?

Not here — the frame is solid black. Compositing a visual requires a video editor.

How large will the MP4 be?

Much smaller than the WAV. The video is a static black frame that compresses to almost nothing, and the audio is compressed to AAC, so a 600 MB WAV becomes a file of tens of megabytes.

What bitrate should I choose?

192 kbps is a good default. Since the WAV is a clean first-generation source, 256 or 320 kbps is worth choosing if the upload target does not mind the size.

Is there a size limit?
