FAQ
How much smaller will the file be?
At the default 192 kbps, roughly a tenth of the original. A 60 MB WAV lands near 6 MB. The exact ratio depends only on the bitrate you choose and the length of the recording — unlike video, it does not depend on the content.
What bitrate should I use?
192 kbps is a safe default for music on ordinary equipment. Choose 320 kbps for material you may re-edit or that will be listened to closely; 128 kbps or lower is fine for speech, where it roughly halves the file again with no practical loss of intelligibility.
Does it handle 24-bit or 96 kHz studio files?
Yes, but MP3 cannot store them as such. MP3 supports sample rates up to 48 kHz, so a 96 kHz master is resampled during encoding, and the extra bit depth is discarded. Keep the WAV if you need the master; the MP3 is a distribution copy.
Can I convert back to WAV later without losing anything?
You can convert back, but the quality does not return. MP3 discards information permanently; decoding to WAV afterwards produces a large file containing exactly the audio the MP3 held. Keep the original WAV if it matters.
How large a file can I convert?
About 1.4 GB, which is roughly two hours of CD-quality stereo. The ceiling comes from how much the converter can hold while it works, not from an upload limit — there is no upload.
Why is it slower than converting an image?
Because MP3 encoding is real signal processing over every sample, and a long recording holds a lot of samples. Expect a few seconds per minute of audio. The progress bar shows an estimate once it has measured your machine's actual rate.
Is it really free?

Do I need to install anything?
