Why is the WAV enormous compared with the Opus?

Because Opus is extraordinarily efficient at low bitrates and WAV is not compressed at all. A voice note at 24 kbps can become fifty times larger as uncompressed PCM.

What sample rate will I get?

Usually 48 kHz, because that is what Opus works at internally. If the tool you are feeding expects 44.1 kHz, set it explicitly in the advanced options.

Does this improve the recording?

No. Opus is lossy and what it discarded is not stored anywhere. WAV prevents further loss, which is what matters when the file is about to be edited.

Why do transcription tools want WAV?

Because uncompressed PCM needs no decoding and is unambiguous. Many speech tools accept nothing else, even though the recording arrived as Opus.

Can I convert back to Opus afterwards?

Not with this converter. The Opus encoder in the WebAssembly ffmpeg build fails on every input, while the decoder works — so conversions from Opus are available and conversions to it are not.
