FAQ
Does extracting to M4A copy the original AAC track?
No. It decodes and re-encodes, which is a second lossy pass. There is no setting here that lifts the original track out untouched; extract to WAV if you need to avoid re-compression.
M4A or MP3 — which should I choose?
M4A if your devices are Apple or you want better quality per megabyte. MP3 if compatibility matters more — car stereos, older players and some software still expect it and nothing else.
Is M4A the same as AAC?
Nearly. AAC is the codec; M4A is the file that holds it. A raw .aac file exists too but is less widely supported, which is why M4A is the usual choice.
Will it play on Android and Windows?
Yes. M4A support is effectively universal now — the format's Apple association is historical rather than technical.
What bitrate should I use?
192 kbps is a good default and, because AAC is more efficient than MP3, sounds better than an MP3 at the same rate. There is no benefit in exceeding the bitrate of the source track.
How long does it take?
Seconds for a normal clip. The video is discarded rather than decoded, so the time depends on the audio length.
