Why can I not open my AVIF file?

Because it is a recent format. Browsers decode it, but many image editors, office applications, print workflows and older devices have not implemented it yet.

Will the JPG be larger?

Yes, usually considerably. AVIF is far more efficient, so matching its quality in JPG needs more data. You are converting for compatibility rather than size.

What happens to transparency?

It becomes white, because JPG has no alpha channel. Convert to PNG instead if the image has transparency you need to keep.

Is quality lost?

A little, since both are lossy and this is a second pass. Raise the quality setting for images with text or sharp edges, which show JPG artefacts sooner than photographs do.

Can I convert JPG to AVIF here?

Not yet. Browsers can decode AVIF but not encode it, and this converter uses the browser's own codecs — so that direction is marked unavailable rather than shipped broken.
