FAQ
Why does my 3GP recording sound so poor?
Because AMR captures roughly the frequency range of a telephone call — about 8 kHz sampling, tuned for speech only. That was the point: it had to fit down a mobile connection in the early 2000s.
Can converting improve the quality?
No. The information was never recorded. Converting changes the format so more things can play it; it cannot invent detail the original codec discarded.
What bitrate should I use?
Lower than the default — 96 or 128 kbps. The source is narrowband speech, and a higher bitrate produces a bigger file with no audible gain.
These are old family recordings. Is that a problem?
No, and this is the common case. Old phone recordings are exactly what this conversion is for: the format is obsolete, the content is not, and moving it to MP3 keeps it playable for another twenty years.
Does it handle 3G2 files as well?
Yes. 3G2 is the CDMA variant of the same format and is accepted here alongside 3GP.
Is anything uploaded?
