FAQ

Why will nothing open my WebP file?

Browsers have supported WebP for years, but plenty of desktop software has not caught up — older Photoshop versions, many print workflows, and a lot of upload forms still reject it. The image itself is fine; only the container and codec are unfamiliar, which is exactly what converting fixes.

Does the image get worse?

Slightly. Re-encoding one lossy format as another always costs a little detail. At the default quality of 82 the difference is not visible at normal viewing size on a photograph, but flat colour, text and sharp edges show it sooner — raise the quality to 90 or above for those.

What happens to transparency?

It becomes white, because JPG has no alpha channel at all. Convert to PNG instead if the transparency matters; PNG keeps it exactly, at the cost of a larger file.

Will the JPG be bigger than the WebP?

Usually yes, and that is expected — WebP is the more efficient format, so matching its quality in JPG takes more bytes. You are converting for compatibility, not for size. The result panel shows the actual change for your file.

Does it handle animated WebP?

No. An animated WebP holds many frames and JPG holds exactly one, so only the first frame is written. Convert to GIF or MP4 if you need the animation.

Is anything uploaded?
