FAQ

Why can nothing open my FLV?

Because Flash, which these files were made for, was removed from browsers at the end of 2020. The file is fine; the runtime it depended on no longer exists.

Will the MP4 look better than the FLV?

No. It will look the same at best. Flash-era video was encoded at low bitrates and small frame sizes, and no conversion can add detail that was never recorded.

Should I convert the video or just extract the audio?

If the content is a lecture, tutorial or podcast recording, extracting audio is faster, produces a far smaller file and skips the quality loss of re-encoding video. Convert the video only when you need the picture.

How long does it take?

A noticeable fraction of the clip's own length, since every frame is decoded and re-encoded. The small frame sizes typical of FLV make it quicker than a modern video of the same duration.
