JPG or PNG for a TIFF?

JPG for photographs and photographic scans, where it is vastly smaller. PNG for document scans with text, line art and diagrams, where JPG leaves visible haze around sharp edges.

Why is the first conversion slow?

Because browsers cannot decode TIFF, so a WebAssembly build of ffmpeg has to download first — about 7 MB. Later conversions in the same session start immediately.

How much smaller will the JPG be?

Usually one or two orders of magnitude, since TIFF is often uncompressed. A 100 MB scan can become a few megabytes.

My TIFF is CMYK or 16-bit — what happens?

It is converted to 8-bit RGB, because JPG supports nothing else in general use. Colours will shift slightly; keep the TIFF as the master for print.

What quality setting should I use?

82 is a good default for photographs. For a document scan you intend to read, 90 or higher keeps the text edges clean — or use PNG instead.
