Which audio track do I get if there are several?
The first one, which is what your player would choose by default. Selecting a specific track is not offered here; a desktop tool such as MKVToolNix can extract a chosen track without re-encoding at all.
What happens to 5.1 surround?
It is downmixed to stereo. MP3 has no surround mode that players support reliably, so the six channels are folded into two. Dialogue usually survives well; a heavily mixed film score loses its separation.
Why is the audio in my MKV not MP3 already?
MKV releases normally use AAC, AC-3 or DTS because those are what the source disc or stream carried. They are different codecs, so the track genuinely has to be decoded and re-encoded rather than copied.
How long does a two-hour film take?
A minute or two. The video is skipped rather than decoded, so the work is proportional to the length of the audio and not to the size of the file.
Is there a size limit?
2 GB on desktop. Since the output is only the audio, the ceiling is the largest file the converter will take rather than anything about the result.
Does it work with a file that will not play on my TV?
Usually yes. A TV rejecting an MKV is refusing the container or the video codec; the audio track is read independently of both.
