FAQ

Is any quality lost?

None at all. FLAC is lossless, so decoding it to WAV yields exactly the original samples. This is one of the few conversions here where "identical" is literally true.

Why is the WAV about twice the size?

Because FLAC compresses to roughly half the space without losing anything. Removing that compression restores the full size of the raw audio.

Can I convert back to FLAC without loss?

Yes. Both formats are lossless, so a round trip returns the same samples. That is not true of any conversion involving MP3 or AAC.

When should I use WAV over FLAC?

Only when a specific tool demands uncompressed input — some samplers, game engines and older editors. Otherwise FLAC is strictly better: same audio, half the size.

Why is the size limit lower here?

Because the output is larger than the input, and it is the output that has to fit in the converter's working memory. Conversions that shrink the file can accept much bigger sources.
