FAQ
Are the numbers real text or a picture?
Real text, drawn in Helvetica — one of the fourteen faces every PDF reader has built in, so nothing has to be embedded. That means the numbers stay sharp at any zoom, can be selected and copied like the rest of the page, and cost a handful of bytes per page rather than an image each.
Why can I only choose numeric formats?
Because of that same built-in font. "7", "7 / 33" and "- 7 -" use only digits, a slash and a dash, which every reader can render without help. "Page 7 of 33" needs words, and the moment the word should be Chinese the built-in fonts have no glyph for it — so the choice was between three formats that work identically in every language and making you download a font for one label. We took the first.
My document has a cover page. Can numbering start on page 2 with a 1?
Yes, and that is what the two controls together are for. Select the pages to number — type 2- to mean "page two to the end" — and set the starting number to 1. The cover stays clean and the first numbered page reads 1. The total in the "7 / 33" format counts the numbered pages, so it agrees with what is printed.
What happens on pages that are rotated?
The number lands where you asked, in the frame you actually see. PDF drawing coordinates ignore the rotation a page declares, so on a sideways scan a naive "bottom centre" ends up running up the edge of the page. Every page is measured in its displayed orientation and the text is counter-rotated to match. Measured on a file whose four pages declare 0, 90, 180 and 270 degrees: every number landed 49% across and 95-97% down the page as displayed — the same spot on all four.
Will it remove numbers the document already has?
No — nothing is taken away, so a document that was already numbered ends up with two sets. There is no reliable way to find a printed page number and erase it: it is drawing instructions mixed in with the rest of the page, not a field. If the old numbers are in a margin, cropping is the usual answer; otherwise number a copy that does not have them.
Does anything else in the file change?
Nothing. This edits the document you gave us and saves it back, so the outline, the internal links and any fillable form survive, and no page content is re-encoded. Bear in mind that page numbers are drawn on top of the page, so on a document with no bottom margin a number can land over the text — the position control is there for that.
