Why re-encode instead of just repacking?
Because transport streams often carry irregular timestamps and mid-stream changes that a straight copy turns into a file that stutters or will not seek. Re-encoding costs time and produces a dependable result.
Is quality lost?
A little, since the video is compressed a second time. The default quality preset keeps it invisible for broadcast material, which was not pristine to begin with.
My recording was cut off mid-broadcast — will it convert?
Usually yes. Transport streams are designed to remain usable when truncated, so a recording that stops abruptly generally converts up to that point.
Are M2TS files from a camcorder supported?
Yes. M2TS is the Blu-ray and AVCHD variant of the same container, accepted here alongside TS.
What happens to 5.1 audio?
It is re-encoded to AAC and downmixed to stereo. If preserving the surround mix matters, a desktop tool is the better route.
Is there a size limit?
About 667 MB, which a long high-definition recording can exceed. For those, extracting just the audio — which has a 2 GB ceiling — is often what people actually want.
