3GP was standardised by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project for mobile networks, at a time when a video call had to fit down a 2G or early 3G connection. Every choice in it serves that constraint: frame sizes of 176×144 or 320×240, low frame rates, H.263 or early MPEG-4 video, and AMR speech audio sampling at 8 kHz. It is a container built for scarcity.

The files are therefore tiny and rough, and they are almost always personal: a child's first steps, a wedding filmed on a Nokia, a holiday from twenty years ago. Converting to MP4 re-encodes to H.264 and AAC so any current device will open them — but it cannot improve them. The picture stays small and soft and the audio still sounds like a phone call, because that is what was recorded. Scaling up in the settings produces a larger blurry image, not a sharper one.
The argument for doing it now rather than later is support. 3GP is disappearing from software the same way Flash did, quietly and without announcement. These files are small enough that converting a whole archive takes minutes, and the results are small enough to back up anywhere.

Can converting make an old phone video look better?
No. The frame size and detail were fixed when it was recorded. Converting changes the format so modern devices will open it; upscaling produces a larger blurry image, not a sharper one.
Why does the audio sound like a phone call?
Because it is AMR, a speech codec sampling at 8 kHz built for mobile networks. It captured intelligible voice and essentially nothing else.
Are 3G2 files supported?
Yes. 3G2 is the CDMA variant of the same container and is accepted alongside 3GP.
Should I convert my old recordings now?
If you care about them, yes. Support for 3GP is quietly disappearing from software, and converting while tools still read the format is easier than trying in five years.
How long does it take?
Seconds per file. These recordings are tiny by modern standards, so even a full re-encode finishes quickly.
Should I convert the video or just the audio?
Convert the video if the picture matters to you at all — it is quick and the file stays small. Extract audio only if what you want is the voices.
